It has been a vital method of transportation since ancient times and remains an important part of Egypt’s economy today. Over 90% of the population live near the river and almost all of the cultural and historical sites are found along its banks. This recording captures some of the local birds and distant boats that constantly travel up and down the river.
Buy Daraw is a city on the banks of the Nile near Aswan in Egypt. It is mostly known for its camel market on Sundays, but a lively street market selling fruits, vegetables and others goods is open daily.
Sell El Kab is an upper Egyptian town located on the Nile south of Luxor. It contains a variety of ancient tombs and temples that span thousands of years. The local children chase after visitors of these incredible sites and fight to sell them homemade baskets in between locations.
Swenett Aswan is a city located on the Nile in southern Egypt. It has been an important city to Egyptian culture for thousands of years due to the nearby granite quarries which provided stones for some of Egypt’s greatest monuments. The city is an important tourist center today and draws in visitors from all over the world, but the local gas vendors still walk around the streets and bang wrenches against the gas canisters to draw attention to their product.
Sing Islam is the dominant religion in Egypt, but there is also a sizable Christian population in the country. It is not uncommon to come across a church ceremony such as this one recorded of children at the Francescan Church for Latin in Luxor.
Nekheb Dating back to 1854, the Egyptian National Railway was the first railway to open and operate in Africa and the Middle East. It remains a popular form of travel in the country and travels over 800 million passenger miles annually. This recording captured a pass near the town of El Kab which is located between Luxor and Aswan.
Harvest Luxor was the ancient capital of Upper Egypt during the New Kingdom period. The incredible monuments from this era draw in thousands of tourists every year, but agriculture is also important to the local economy. Despite the desert climate, large farms exist on the outskirts of the city and this recording captured a sugar cane harvest and the helpful donkeys in early 2019.
