Echo A fairly common sound in Shanghai are saxophones being practiced in the park on the weekend. In this recording the familiar sound came not from a park, but an abandoned building. The City of Shanghai held the largest World Expo in history in 2010, but today most of the buildings sit empty in various states of disrepair. The featured saxophonist was spending a Sunday morning making use of the echoing acoustics of the former World Expo building, just out of sight from any passersby.

CalMac The Hebrides are a large archipelago located off the west coast of Scotland. The islands are divided into the Inner and Outer Hebrides and the Sea of the Hebrides lies in between. Visitors and residents use the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry system to get between the islands. One of the workers pulled out his bagpipes on a break to practice his playing during a voyage between the Isle of Skye and the Isle of Harris.
Tradition Pingtan is a genre of musical storytelling that originated in Suzhou, Jiangsu during the end of the Ming Dynasty in the 1600s. It is performed in the local Suzhou dialect of Mandarin Chinese and features two stringed instruments called the sanxian and pipa. This is an excerpt from ‘The Phoenix Hairpin’ which was adapted from a poem written by the Song Dynasty author Lu You. The piece tells the tragic story of the author’s meeting in a garden with his long-lost lover whom he was forced to separate with when he was younger. This performance was recording in a tea house on Suzhou’s Pingjiang Old Street.
