Since the middle ages, an Islamic religious ritual known as the Sema has been practiced in Turkey. The ceremony consists of dancers that can be seen whirling in repetitive circles while in their white robes. The dance is seen as a symbolic imitation of planets in the solar system revolving around the sun. The music that accompanies the dancers is hypnotic and is lead by the Ney flute player.
