Completed in 1788 as a part of the South Bridge in Edinburgh, the vaults are a series of chambers below the bridge. Built to connect High Street to the University of Edinburgh, the vaults were originally used for business, but were abandoned due poor air quality and dampness. The abandoned tunnels became housing slums for the poor and have a dark history due to the living conditions.
