This 13th-century ‘New Jerusalem’ remains situated in red volcanic rock in the northern region of Ethiopia. Lalibela is an incredible labyrinth of 11 monolithic churches, tunnels and catacombs. Today it still remains a place of pilgrimage and devotion.
