Varanasi is considered the spiritual capital and an important religious center in India. Thousands of Hindus make a spiritual pilgrimage each day to the city’s Ghats, or riverside stairs, on the Ganges River to bathe in the holy water. At sunset, Hindu priests conduct elaborate ceremonies with candles, incense, bells, and chanting.
