South Shetland Islands
Yankee Harbour is located on Greenwich Island in Antarctica’s South Shetland Islands. It is a remarkable natural haven that attracted a wide variety of seals and seal hunters in the early 19th century. Remnants of the sealing era can still be found on the island, but the main attraction for today’s visitors is the gentoo penguin colony. The colony is estimated to have a population of 4,000 breeding pairs. The most frequently heard call of the penguin is a loud trumpeting sound, which is emitted with its head thrown back.
