According to Catholic tradition, St. Peter’s Basilica is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. Located in the Vatican, the Pope presides at several services throughout the year. Though the site of St. Peter’s has been home to a church since the Roman Empire, construction of the present basilica was completed in 1626.
