Visitors are cautioned against swimming in the turbulent waters due to the rip tides that can present dangers to swimmers of all skill levels. Despite the strong currents, the nightly sunset is always magical.
Frozen Located in the Superior National Forest, Gunflint is a lake in northern Minnesota that straddles the border with the Canadian province of Ontario. This was recorded as the lake was in process of freezing over for the winter. The strong winds created waves that broke up the ice and made a unique sound as the pieces crashed into the shore.
Guira Merengue is a style of Dominican music and dance. During the 20th century, merengue’s original lead instrument was the guitar. By the 1940s and 1950s it was performed with accordions, like it is in this recording from La Zona Colonial. The melody is accompanied by the Guira percussion scraper and Tambora drum.

Croak The Indian Bullfrog mating call is indeed a seasonal phenomena and quite fascinating to hear. During the Monsoons, when the Rainwater gets collected at places of lower altitude, the resultant ponds turn out to be suitable places for frogs to get together. This leads to a cacophony of ‘Croaks’ which continues throughout the night.
Gwoka Guadeloupe is an overseas region of France located in the Caribbean. Despite the French affiliation, the archipelago maintains its own distinct culture and traditions including music. Gwoka or ‘Big Drum’ refers to both a local style of music and the group of hand drums that are used. The origins date back to the 17th century, but it is still heard around the island today, including this group that was preparing for the upcoming Carnival.
Volcan La Grande Soufrière is a volcano located on the Basse-Terre island of Guadeloupe. At 1,467 meters high, it is the highest mountain peak in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean. The birds and insects of the island provide the soundtrack to the moderately difficult hike to the top. Lucky visitors can be greeted with a stunning display of the surrounding ocean and nearby islands, but others can often be met with cloud cover impacting the views.
