The annual Sarawak Dragonboat Regatta has been active since 1872. During the event, the Kuching riverfront comes alive with hundreds of local residents, as well as food vendors and craft sellers.  Dragonboat crews can range from as low as 10 to as high as 46 people. Boats are led by drummers who signal paddlers using rhythms, hand signals and vocal calls. Fans on the shoreline cheer on their favorites with drums of their own and colorful horns resembling Vuvuzelas. The event is often attended by the Sultan of Brunei with his many wives and children. The day is capped off with the Duck Swim where paddlers jump into the water to catch a swimming duck.
