National Treasure
The Cock of the Rock is the national bird of Peru. A dramatic orange crest adorns the heads of the males, and both sexes display beautiful orange feathers on their backs and wings. The birds’ strong claws and legs allow them to nest near cave entrances and rocky outcrops in South American cloud forests. The conversion of forests to farmland is a major threat to the survival of these unique birds.
