Paauilo
Originally from Puerto Rico, the quarter-sized coqui frog has made a home on the Big Island of Hawaii. Named after its distinct call, “ko-kee”, the male coquis sing at night. Both the dense tropical foliage and the lack of a major predator have permitted the coqui to flourish slowly in the isles since the late 1980s. Paauilo, a small plantation town dating back to Hawaii’s sugar cane days, provides a perfect place to listen to the coqui’s song.
