After continuous attacks from pirates, the city of Camagüey moved to its current inland location in 1528. The colonial center is built like a maze, with winding alleys and forked streets. It is believed that this was done to make it difficult for attackers to navigate the city. Above the narrow streets, the local bird population is vocal first thing in the morning.
