Derinkuyu is Turkey’s largest excavated underground city. It extends eight stories down and a depth of approximately 60 meters. Originally dug out around the 8th century B.C., it is believed to have been expanded downward during the Byzantine era and was large enough to shelter approximately 20,000 people and their livestock.
