Oystercatchers are a group of wading birds found all over the world, but the Variable Oystercatcher is a species that is endemic to New Zealand. These beautiful birds have mostly black plumage, a long red beak and are sometimes referred to as ‘red bills’. This recording comes from Stewart Island where the birds are unique because they are all completely black.
